One more thing: Carrollton city council candidates sound off before election

Published: Wednesday, May 9, 2012 2:37 PM CDT
With only days left, the Carrollton City Council Place 3 candidates get one last word before Saturday's election.

Council candidate Doug Hrbacek, who has served the city for more than 18 years, said he wants his hometown to meet its full potential.

"I have a tremendous sense of duty to future generations of Carrollton citizens," he said. "My vision for our community is a vibrant, safe and family-oriented community with tremendous spirit. We are centrally located in the DFW metroplex, have great highways and rail lines and wonderful people."

Hrbacek said he wants to leverage those assets into quality redevelopment. He said if elected he would work to support the mission of police and fire departments to provide the best in public safety and continue to work for a transparent, inclusive city.

Quality redevelopment, top tier public safety and a transparent, inclusive city are the top three issues facing the city, said Hrbacek.

"If you look at the growth in our region, we are uniquely positioned to attract quality redevelopment. I have spent a great deal of time learning about redevelopment and how it progresses. Quality redevelopment happens around compelling assets unique to that specific area. Carrollton has a central location, great infrastructure -- highways and rail lines -- and talented people."

Hrbacek commended the city's first responders, calling them the best in the world.

"Our neighborhood recently experienced a tragedy involving a young child visiting our community," he said. "We experienced the response, resources and professionalism of our first responders."

As a self-proclaimed fiscal conservative, Hrbacek said he will work to live within the city's means, and if elected will work to increase the tax base, not the tax rate.

"I was raised with family values and I will work to continue a transparent, inclusive municipality," he said. "Over the past 18 years, I have experienced many of the processes that take place in our municipality -- from zoning cases to parks and recreation policy. The best results come from a transparent, inclusive process."

Terrance Wright said the opportunity to serve his neighbors, friends and community was the driving force behind his decision to run for council.

"Carrollton is becoming the center of the Metroplex, which gives us one of the greatest locations for access and we have a great park system with plans for expansion," he said. "The people of our community are a great asset. We have so much to work with and I look forward in working with our community to make it the best place to live."

Wright views new development, or the lack thereof, as an issue facing the city as well as the aging infrastructure. Education is the key to resolving the issues, he said.

"Educating our citizens of the programs our city has in place -- that most people don't even know about such as sidewalk replacement where the city and the landowners share the cost of repairs -- will help with cost and how fast the repairs can be done," he said.

Wright is an 18-year Carrollton resident who has established himself as an architect working with restaurants, retail, office, churches, schools and economic development within Carrollton and other cities. Wright said this skill set will assist him in attracting new business to the area.

"This gives me a wide range of skill sets that are important in development and how a development works," he said. "Since I work with restaurants and other business daily, I know what attracts these business to areas and what makes them successful."

Voting will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. this Saturday. For a list of polling places visit cityofcarrollton.com.
