Sheffield hopes to bring new ideas to LISD

Trisha Sheffield said she has learned so much from being part of Lewisville ISD's Strategic Design Team, she wants to bring some of those ideas to the LISD Board of Trustees.

Sheffield filed Monday to run for Place 2 on the school board, a position held by Vernell Gregg, board president. Gregg has announced her intentions to run for re-election, but she has not officially filed.

Sheffield, a resident of the Lewisville extraterritorial jurisdiction known as Castle Hills, said her involvement with the design team, as well as the Inside LISD Community Leadership Program, prompted her to take her service to the next level.

"The part I love about this process is that it's very unique," Sheffield said of the 26-member committee, which includes members of the community and the district. "Not many districts throw open their doors and say they want the community's input on what direction to take the district. We have representatives from the feeder schools. The whole experience is so exciting because I feel like we are moving forward."

The committee was created in October under the direction of Dr. Stephen Waddell, superintendent.

"There are a lot of great ideas, and nobody has their own personal agenda," Sheffield said. "It's about asking how we can make education better for all the children."

Sheffield said as a board member, she would make sure the ideas generated from these meetings are looked into.

"Often times we see new ideas or new plans, but for whatever reason, they're not followed through," Sheffield said. "Funding will be an issue, so it's not realistic to do these all at once. I just want to make sure we move forward."

Sheffield said among the ideas coming from these sessions include examining innovative ways to teach students.

"Maybe one way of learning isn't the same for all kids," she said.

She said another component to furthering education is looking into foreign language options.

"My big thing is let's make it to when students leave our schools, they find hope for the future," Sheffield said. "That doesn't mean that everyone goes to college, but it means they all graduate from high school and become contributing members of society. I want to give them the tools to do that."

Sheffield said she also hopes to give more representation to the east side of the district. Living in Castle Hills, she is in the part of the district surrounded by Carrollton, The Colony and Frisco. Currently, only Place 4 member Julie Foughty is from that area.

"Right now, there's a sense of disconnect on the east side of the district," Sheffield said. "There is more that we can do to make sure all voices are heard. I wouldn't just serve my own interest. Every school needs a voice."

She added that the district has taken steps to address the disconnect, such as implementing zone leaders.

Sheffield, a copywriter, has lived in LISD for 15 years. She was a parent volunteer in LISD for nine years and was a district employee for eight years.

Sheffield is a graduate of the Inside LISD Community Leadership Program and has served as a leader on local PTA, PTSA and council boards, including PTA president at Killian Middle School and first vice president of programs for the Lewisville Council of PTAs. Additionally, she has served in various capacities on the Castle Hills Schools Foundation Board for Castle Hills Elementary School, LISD Adult & Community Education Advisory Council and Lewisville ISD Education Foundation Gala Committee. Currently she is a member of the Hebron High School PTSA Board, Killian Middle School PTA Board and Hebron High School Choir Booster Club Board.
