Operation Kindness to add new wing

CARROLLTON - Operation Kindness in Carrollton recently broke ground at its facility in celebration of an expansion that will provide shelter exclusively to large breeds of dogs.
Operation Kindness is a no-kill shelter, and with the many dogs and cats they provide for, more room is needed. The expansion came from an individual donation by Norma and Jack Carney of Dallas.
"The Carney's donated $250,000 for the expansion," said Nikki Walker, development director at Operation Kindness. "There were volunteers here about 10 years ago and they adopted a large dog named Bear in 2004. They donated the money for the purpose of building an indoor facility for large animals."
"There will also be garage doors on the sides of the building," Walker said. "When it is nice outside we will be able to open the doors and have a nice cross breeze for the dogs. It will also get clean air in there instead of being stagnant."
Walker said Operation Kindness had been looking to expand for sometime; however, they did not have the funds to do so yet. She said they were estimating around $250,000 for an expansion, and when the Carneys donated the money it was blessing.
"It was a collaboration between us and the Carneys," she said. "We were looking to expand in a couple of years, but with their donation we are now ahead of schedule."
Operation Kindness will begin construction in two weeks. Walker said they will not have to move any of the animals due to the construction, but will have to make sure the animals receive extra attention and will not become alarmed or frightened by the loud noises.
"We will be very diligent in working around the construction," Walker said. "We will make sure our volunteers give the animals lots of love, but the construction will not impede our everyday operations."
Walker said the new wing is planned to open in November. She said the contractor is in position but some permits are still being worked out.
"This expansion will double the amount of space we have for our large dogs," Walker said. "We are so thankful for the Carneys' donation. We will be able to take in more animals, so we ask for continued support from the community."
