Have a splash bash
Rosemeade Rainforest Aquatic Complex pool will close from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3, open for Labor Day weekend and then close for the season starting Sept. 7.
Labor Day hours at Rosemeade will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 4, 1 to 6 p.m. Sept. 5 and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 6.
Register online now for Adult Basketball League
Registration for the Adult Basketball League is underway, but will end Sept. 2. The cost is $370 for the league; participants must be 18 years old or older.
Games will be played at Rosemeade Recreation Center for the Sunday league starting Sept. 19 and Crosby Recreation Center for the Tuesday league starting Sept. 21 through early Nov.

Youth Basketball League signup
Registration for Carrollton Youth Basketball will be held Sept. 7 through Oct. 8. The season runs from Nov. 13 to Jan. 29.
A Mini League for boys and girls ages 5 and 6 includes games on Nov. 13, 20, Dec. 4, 11, andJan. 8, 15, 22 and 29. The $80 per resident and $100 per non-resident registration fee includes practices, eight league games, a jersey and a participation trophy.
The Recreational League for boys and girls ages 7 through 14 includes games on Nov. 13, 20, Dec. 4, 11, and Jan. 8, 15, 22 and 29. Single elimination bracket playoffs will be held Feb. 1-5. The $80 per resident and $100 per non-resident fee includes practices, eight league games, playoffs, jersey, playoff trophies, officials and scorekeeper services.
Teams are organized by a draft system based on age and school attended. Practices begin the week of Nov. 1 but are not scheduled on school holidays.
Interested basketball players can register online at cityofcarrollton.com/signupnow, in person at Rosemeade Recreation Center or Crosby Recreation Center, or at the city of Carrollton Athletics Office located in the Hebron and Josey Library (4220 North Josey Lane).

Read to Rover at the library
Readers can read a favorite book one-on-one to a Heart of Texas therapy dog for free at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11 at Hebron and Josey Library. These specially trained dogs love to hear kids read.
Younger children and their parents may take photos with the dogs after all readers have read to Rover.

Carrollton PD offers RAD class
The Carrollton Police Department will be offering a Rape Aggression Defense class from 1 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 and Sunday, Sept. 12. The class will be held in the Carrollton Police Department Training Room. RAD is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women.
This class is open to women who are at least 17 years old. Each class is a total of 12 hours in length and you must be present for at least nine hours to successfully complete the course. Cost for the class is $5.
Attendees of the class should dress comfortably. Sweatpants and workout pants/shorts are acceptable along with comfortable tennis shoes. You do not have to be a Carrollton resident to participate.
The course will be taught by nationally certified RAD instructors, Officer Lauryl Duncan and Officer Shannon Hartzell. Instructors will provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth and is the key to the free lifetime return and practice policy for RAD graduates.

Pooch Pool Party
The annual Pooch Pool Party will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Rosemeade Rainforest Aquatic Complex. Bring your dog out for swimming and scheduled friendly competitions for Best Swimsuit, Best Dog ‘N Owner Look-alike and Pool Toy Retrieval.
Admission is $3 per dog; there is no charge for humans. Owners must show proof of their dog’s current rabies vaccinations.

New city hours begin Sept. 13
Effective Monday, Sept. 13, new office hours for Municipal Court, City Hall and the Carrollton Police Department will be Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Neighborhoods networking event Sept. 18
Join the Neighborhood Advisory Commission and the city of Carrollton Community Services for a Neighborhoods Networking Event for Involved Neighbors from 8:45 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Crosby Recreation Center. The commission and the city are coming together to create community within neighborhoods.
The event will host various speakers as well as provide the opportunity for citizens to build people-to-people connections between neighbors, neighborhoods, city staff and commissioners for the Neighborhood Advisory Commission.
There will be a facilitated “idea exchange” with presenters. Topics will include learning how neighborhood associations can qualify for grant money to improve their neighborhood, how beautification and code enforcement can enhance property value, and will provide a chance to listen to a local officer discuss community safety, followed by a preview of “National Night Out.”

City announces Community Garage Sale
Shoppers are invited to browse the booths at the Community Garage Sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 18 at Crosby Recreation Center.
Carrollton residents and non-residents can rent a 10X10 space for $20 to sell items. The cost for non-residents to rent a booth space is $25. An application must be submitted no later than Sept. 15. All items must be in good taste and suitable for family viewing. Items cannot promote personal businesses to patrons; no solicitation is allowed during the sale.

DART Green Line to open two stations early for Carrollton Festival
Be the first to ride the new Dallas Area Rapid Transit Green Line in Carrollton. DART has announced plans to partner with Carrollton’s Festival at the Switchyard Oct. 22 and 23, and open two of the three Carrollton stations along the “northwest corridor” of DART’s Green Line.
Both the Trinity Mills Station and the Downtown Carrollton Station will open for the festival only. After the festival, the stations will close again until the slated Dec. 6, 2010 opening.
The inaugural, two-day, outdoor event will take place on the Downtown Carrollton Square, steps away from the Downtown Carrollton DART station, and will feature live entertainment from Polyphonic Spree and the Old 97s on Friday night and Robert Earl Keen on Saturday night.
The location, just east of I-35 on the south side of Belt Line Road, is midway between George Bush Turnpike and LBJ Freeway. Festival attendees will be able to park at either the Trinity Mills or Downtown Carrollton DART station and be among the first to ride the DART Rail to the Festival, steps away from the Carrollton Station.
In addition to the exciting concerts, great food, beer and wine, arts and crafts, live entertainment, interactive games and activities for children of all ages are planned. Carrollton’s Festival at the Switchyard has plans to keep the kid in all of us excited all festival long with a kids’ area that will keep anyone entertained for hours. Booger Wars, Giant Human Hamster Balls and Bungee Trampolines will all be featured and for no additional charge after the $5 per person, per day entrance fee, with children 5 years old and under free. There will also be live music throughout the festival leading up to the headliners each night.

PSO 2010-2011 season opens Sept. 25 with 'Forza Italia'
Hector Guzman, music director, has announced the 2010–2011 Plano Symphony Orchestra Season. Building on solid successes with consecutive capacity seasons, artistic excellence, and a format of combining classical and pops musical styles into one season, the 2010-2011 season will feature famous performers from many musical backgrounds.
The 2010-2011 season features eight concerts beginning with “Forza Italia” on Sept. 25. This opening night performance will include Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 and Respighi’s “Roman Festivals.” The Renaissance Hotel will also feature a special Italian menu that will complement the Italian theme for the Opening Night.
Broadway soprano Linda Eder will follow on Oct. 23 in “Somewhere Over the Rainbow: A Tribute to Judy Garland.” This performance will feature standards from the American Songbook made famous by Garland.
Quartet San Francisco will accompany tango dancers Sandor & Parissa in “Tango!” on Nov. 20. Sandor was the male lead in the Broadway show “Forever Tango,” and both he and his partner Parissa choreographed and coached the Argentine Tango portions of Season 8 of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
The perennial favorite “Home for the Holidays” performance, Dec. 19, will feature soprano Teresa Gomez. The first concert of the New Year, “Scheherazade” on Jan. 29, will include Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, performed by pianist Jae Hyuck Cho.
On Feb. 26, the Classical Mystery Tour, sold out the world over, will perform the hits of the Beatles, and on March 19, Barbara Padilla, the second-prize winner of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” will perform music from grand opera and Broadway.
The Grand Prize winners of the Collin County Young Artist Competition will also perform at the March 19 concert.
The 2010-2011 season ends with “A Grand Finale” on April 2. This performance will feature Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 – “Ode to Joy,” and Mozart’s Symphony No. 40.
