C-FB ISD approves network electronics for Freeman Elementary

Published: Thursday, September 2, 2010 11:38 AM CDT
The C-FB ISD School Board met last Thursday and approved all items on the consent agenda, most importantly new network electronics for Freeman Elementary School.

Using a 2003 technology bond package, the school board approved the $79,287 purchase that will upgrade network electronics at the school and do away with the old electronics that have reached the end of their functional life. The school, which opened in 2003, has not had upgrades in its network electronic equipment prior to this approval.

In other news at the meeting, the school board announced new employees to multiple schools throughout the district. Creekview and Ranchview High School both received two new members to the staff. David Carroll will become a part of Creekview’s special education program and Nicholas Escobar will be the new discipline management class assistant. Dawn Wyszynski was named the new nurse at Ranchview High School, while Thomas Davenport became the web technology instructor at Ranchview.

Other schools that received new staff members included, Central Elementary, Sheffield Primary and Marie Huie Special Education Center.

Lastly, the school board gave a presentation over this year’s summer school and the success it had. This year, C-FB ISD had 4,921 students enrolled in summer school classes at all grade levels.

The focus of this year’s summer school was to help all students achieve a “high level of excellence in all areas.” The summer programs were broken down into grade levels and what the district wanted to accomplish with each student.

For the elementary and middle school level, the district focused on providing opportunities for students to gain skills which will result in mastery of state standards, focuses on providing acceleration for students needing additional instruction for TAKS test and preparing fifth and eighth grade students for the TAKS test.

At the high school level, the district’s focus was to provide opportunities for credit recovery and credit acceleration for students who have fallen behind and might not graduate on time. In addition, the district utilized the online district curriculum for all courses taught, which included reading and writing activities in all academic areas.

At the end of summer school session, elementary, middle and high school students were administered the TAKS test. For elementary and middle school students the overall consensus was that students were improving on TAKS scores. For high school students, more than half who took the TAKS test needed for graduation or moving on to the next grade level passed, including 77 percent of students passing the social studies portion of the test.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the administration building located at 1445 N. Perry Road.
