Carrollton wins Pretreatment Award

Published: Friday, August 27, 2010 1:19 PM CDT
The Carrollton Environmental Services Department received the Pretreatment Pollution Prevention Leadership Award for their service to keep Carrollton free of pollution.

The award was given to the department by the Environmental Protection Agency Region VI Pretreatment Association earlier this month. Carrollton Pretreatment Program is part of the Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System to control pollutants – such as heavy metals, organic chemicals, drugs, oil and grease – discharged into sewer systems from homes, commercial buildings and industrial facilities to the wastewater treatment plants.

“This award was possible because of the years forged in creating a program anchored on strong partnership between the city and its industries,” said Ta Soriaga, Carrollton environmental quality division manager. “The city has many industries that have made the commitment to achieve environmental excellence, and to improve the quality and vitality of the community. These facilities have made pollution prevention an integral part of their daily activates.”

The award was given to the Environmental Service at their prereatment conference earlier this month. They were awarded specifically on their pollution prevention within the city.

“Pollution prevention is reducing or eliminating waste at its source,” said Patrick Allen, industrial pretreatment coordinator. “We modify how things are produced. Our job is to come through your building and point out the issues that we find. It might be changing your light bulbs to a more energy efficient and cost friendly light bulb, or something simple as using less water or making a more conservative effort to recycle more.”

Allen said a pollution prevention service has been going on in Carrollton for around 10 years. He said they wanted to educate local industries about different environmental regulations and different things they could do to help save money while also helping the environment.

“We host industrial meetings where we will bring in representatives from the state who really shares a lot of great information with our industries,” Allen said. “The more experts we can bring in to educate our industries the better.”

Allen said the pretreatment program is a federally mandated program to protect the waste treatment plants. The reduction of pollutants to wastewater treatment is important to prevent the clogging of sewer lines and overloading of the treatment plants which could cause these pollutants to pass through into drinking source and recreational surface waters.

“Carrollton is fortunate to have a lot of strong industries that strive to be environmentally responsible,” Allen said. “There are some instances where we will go out to check and industry and everything will be as good as it can be. That says a lot about the people we have here in Carrollton.”

Allen said the Environmental Serviced Department is honored to receive this award and will continue to make strides to help prevent pollution in Carrollton.

“It is great to get the recognition,” Allen said. “This is award was made possible by everybody involved and we are honored to receive this award for the city.”
