Senior Center group sews stuffed animals for babies in need

Carrollton resident Elaine Mattingly spent part of a recent Monday afternoon at the Senior Center drawing faces on homemade stuffed animals. Mattingly is a part of the Carrollton Senior Cutups, which formed about three months ago to sew stuffed animals to send to babies at Children’s Hospital.
“These go to babies so they have something to chew on and hold,” she said.
The group meets from noon to 2 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of each month.
On the Monday of Thanksgiving week, Mattingly was the only group member on hand, but she said typically there are about two to three others who join her sewing. She said a few other women sew from home and bring in their finished products.
“I have grandchildren, and I think maybe these are going to little babies that don’t have a lot in their own home,” said Mattingly about why she joined. “I also like to sew, and I like crafty things.”
So far about 25 stuffed animals are completed, and they vary from teddy bears to dogs, cats and rabbits.
The Cutups group at the Carrollton Senior Center is part of a larger group in the Dallas area, known as the Senior Source’s RSVP volunteers. The Senior Source is a Dallas agency with various programs that serve people over 55.
“We’ll give the stuffed animals to Senior Source, and they will distribute them,” said Lori Luckey, recreation coordinator at the Carrollton Senior Center.
Mattingly said making the stuffed animals is relatively easy. There are patterns available. Volunteers cut out the fabric from the pattern, sew it up leaving the bottom open for stuffing, then after stuffing, sew up the bottom and draw a face on the animal.
“If you do one from start to finish it takes about 15 to 20 minutes each,” Mattingly said.
The Cutups will meet again at noon Monday, Dec.14.
