Bus driver placed on leave

Published: Friday, November 14, 2008 9:28 PM CST
An unnamed bus driver for Plano ISD was placed on administrative leave Wednesday following allegations of an incident with a student.

On Thursday, Nancy Long, communications coordinator for Plano ISD, confirmed that the driver was placed on administrative leave with pay pending investigation.

"Allegations have been made that an incident occurred," Long said.

A seventh-grade student at Armstrong Middle School said that during the first week of November his bus driver "threw him over a seat, spanked him and asked surrounding kids if they had a belt she could use." The student also said she made inappropriate comments toward him and another student. All Plano ISD buses have video cameras.

Jennifer Khonsarra, the student's mother, said that he told her about the events when he was on the way to school on Wednesday.

"I told [him] to go talk to the principal," Jennifer Khonsarra said.

According to the student, he and two other students were called into the principal's office and separately signed statements about the incident.

He said that at the beginning of the school year, the bus driver was polite to him and his friend, but about three weeks into the school year she began asking the two personal questions. The student said he answered some of her questions, but after a while quit answering her. He also said she singled him and the other student out and had them sit in assigned seats right behind her.

Jennifer Khonsarra said she has worked to get her son a transfer out of Armstrong Middle School, but has been denied until the end of the semester in December. She has contacted private schools, but all the seventh-grade classes are full. She said she wants this transfer because she feels Armstrong is not the right place for her son.

The Khonsarras have two other children, one who has already graduated and one in high school, both from Plano ISD. According to Jennifer, she and her family have never had problems with the district before this. Her son said that other than this incident, school is good for him.

This is the first year he has ridden the bus to school.

An internal investigation will most likely be conducted by the district's safety and security staff. Because of the personal nature of the investigation, officials did not release the name of the bus driver in question.
