Find out what to eat, where to find bumper stickers, political memorabilia at library
By Tina Hager
I am beginning to think that I am living in a different state. Every year I tell people (especially newcomers) that if you can survive August in Texas you’ll be fine the rest of the year. Well, this year has totally thrown off my weather advice and predictions because 2008 has had the most comfortable August I have ever experienced since I have lived here. I am not complaining by any means. Even though we have had some “hot” days, it has not been anything compared to what we have had in past years. Almost makes me wonder what winter is going to be like?
Speaking of hot, hot new bestsellers that have been added to the library this week include: “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society” by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows; “The Lace Reader” by Brunonia Barry; “The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality” by Jerome R. Corsi, Ph.D.; “Moscow Rules” by Daniel Silva; “Into the Fire” by Suzanne Brockmann; and “Damage Control” by J.A. Jance. Other new books added to the collection include “Spooky Campfire Tales”; “Texas: a Compact History”; “Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens: Helping Young People Learn to Use the Internet Safely and Responsibly” by Nancy E. Willard; “Lost in Katrina” by Mikel Schaefer; “The Eat-Clean Diet Cookbook” by Tosca Reno; and “Texas Political Memorabilia: Buttons, Bumper Stickers, and Broadsides” by Chuck Bailey.
Libraries are more than just books and with that in mind, mark your calendars to attend the biggest business fair ever. August 23rd, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be 10 vendors available to share information about their organization or services.
There will also be items available for purchase from some of these vendors. Representatives from Rachel Foster Pictures; D.E. and Associates Homeworkers; Homemade Gourmet; Jewelry and Crafts by Denise; Little Elm Toastmasters; Seizure Support Group; ICDM Counseling (tutorial and financial services); Little Elm Teen Advisory Board (providing drink fundraiser); The Enchanted Dragonfly; American International Realty; and Lin’s Beauty Supply. There will also be a bake sale fundraiser and Voter Registration Cards will be on hand if you have not registered to vote (since this is an election year.) Last day to register to vote in the November 2008 election is October 6th.
The Conivin’ Cowboy Joe Reilly, local author, will also be on hand on August 23rd from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. signing and selling his book “Magic, Luck, or Guardian Angels.” Drop by to say hello to this down-to- earth, fun-to-talk-to author who has held a variety of jobs including working for various trucking companies.
Other programs of interest coming up for the week include diabetes support group, August 25th at 10:30 a.m.; CSI who done it at 4 p.m. and Anime Club at 5:30 p.m. on August 26th. In celebration of the Olympics, on August 28th, the library will be hosting a library Olympics at 4 p.m. and a Wii Olympics at 5 p.m. Chess club follows at 5:30 p.m.; Stitchin bee meets at 6 p.m. and Little Elm Toastmasters meet at 7 p.m. The library will be closed August 29th through September 1st for the Labor Day weekend.
