Newman Smith’s football team closed out its final week of spring drills with a bang.

Wednesday, the players loaded buses and headed for Irving’s Texas Stadium. Smith coach Paul Ressa wanted to give his squad a taste of what it is like to play in a playoff game at Texas Stadium.

Before leaving, the players were presented with shirts bearing the team’s 2008 motto “All In.”

Ressa said after every season he and his coaches talk about the weaknesses they saw. Most of the coaches agreed that the main concern was that all the players weren’t on the same page when doing things.

Thus the motto “All In” was born. It is a poker term used when a player bets all the chips he/she has left at the table.

“We set goals then,” Ressa said. “The players understand what the expectations are for them.”

Once the team arrived at Texas Stadium, they went through their 30-minute warm up routine then held a team meeting on the midfield star.

“It was a great break from spring ball,” Ressa said. “It went awesome.”

The Trojans finished things off with the annual Green and Gold Spring Game Saturday at Standridge Stadium.

Ressa said the game was a spirited affair with plenty of hits.

“No one was walking on or off the field,” he said. “It was a good atmosphere.”

The game went to overtime with the Green squad winning, 20-17. The White squad kicked a field goal in overtime and Green countered with a touchdown.
