Crosby Community Center plans indoor garage sale April 12
An indoor garage sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 12 at the Crosby Community Center, 1610 E. Crosby Road.
The $20 participation fee for Carrollton residents includes a 10-foot by 10-foot space, one table and two chairs.
All items must be in good taste and suitable for family viewing. The city reserves the right to screen and reject items. Items being sold can’t promote personal businesses. No solicitation is allowed during the sale.

Stroke screenings offered at Indian Creek
Life Line screenings to reduce risk of stroke will take place beginning at 9 a.m. April 16 at 1650 Frankford Road.
The complete screening package now includes a new Heart Rhythm screening, which checks for irregular heartbeat, a major risk factor for stroke.
Screenings help identify potential health problems such as blocked arteries and irregular heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysms and hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. A bone density screening to assess osteoporosis risk also is offered for both men and women.
Register for a wellness package with Heart Rhythm for $149. All five screenings take 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

Memorial torch run scheduled for April 19
Registration closes on April 9 for the R.L. Turner Kacie Brekhus Memorial Torch Run 5K Run/Walk and Family 1 Mile Run/Walk.
The run/walk takes place from 7 to 10 a.m. April 21 at Standridge Stadium.
The event, the hosts of which are R.L. Turner High School, C-FB ISD Education Foundation and Carrollton Parks and Recreation, benefits the All Stars Special Olympics Team within the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD.

Youth in Action take challenge
Creekview High School’s Youth in Action group will walk in the Mothers Against Drunk Driving 5K on April 19.
Teacher Erin Mathews challenged the group to exceed its $1,000 fund-raising goal, and it has surpassed it. Mathews will dye her hair pink for the walk in exchange for the achievement. This marks the third year that Youth in Action will participate in the walk.
AARP offers free tax help
Volunteers with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) provide free tax return assistance to all ages each Monday, through April 14.
Sessions run from noon to 8 p.m. at the Carrollton Public Library at Hebron and Josey, 4220 N. Josey.

Get blood pressure, cholesterol checked for free
CVS/pharmacy will conduct free blood pressure and cholesterol screenings at two Carrollton locations.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 19, the CVS at 3065 N. Josey Lane will provide tests. Then, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 29 to May 1, free checks will be available at the pharmacy at 4100 S.H. 121.

Seminar offers solutions to landscape woes
Keep Carrollton Beautiful will conduct a class on how to make rain gardens and discuss solutions to gardening challenges.
The class will take place from 1 to 4:15 p.m. April 19 at the Coppell Recreation Center. Cost is free.
Metrocrest Chamber hosts Mother’s Day high tea
The Metrocrest Chamber of Commerce Women’s Connection will have a high tea for mothers and their families at 11:30 a.m. April 30 at Bent Tree Country Club, 5201 Westgrove in Dallas.
RSVP by 5 p.m. April 25 for a $300 table or $30 individual member tickets. Non-members are $45. After April 25, prices go up to $450 a table or $45 for all individual tickets.

Flood insurance available to property owners
Carrollton property owners may qualify for reduced premiums on flood insurance policies, the city reports.
Property owners in Carrollton can learn about risks of flooding and insurance coverage options by visiting www.floodsmart.gov.
According to the National Flood Insurance Program, the average flood insurance policy costs approximately $500 per year. For general information, go to floodsmart.gov.
Free city maps available
New 2008 city of Carrollton street maps are available at city facilities.
In addition to a street index, the folding maps provide a list of local points of interest, including historic sites, public facilities, parks, schools and shopping centers in Carrollton.
Maps are available at the Carrollton Senior Center (1720 Keller Springs Road), Rosemeade Recreation Center (1330 E. Rosemeade Parkway), Crosby Community Center (1610 E. Crosby Road), Carrollton Public Library at Josey Ranch Lake (1700 Keller Springs Road), Carrollton Public Library at Hebron and Josey (4220 N. Josey Lane) and at City Hall (1945 E. Jackson Road).
The maps are free.
Step into spring with city pet registration
Carrollton Animal Services reminds residents that annual pet registration is required by city code.
A current city tag is a way to clearly show that a pet has been vaccinated against rabies. Registered pets may also be quickly reunited with their owners at a lesser fee than those not currently registered.
To register by mail, send the rabies certificate and $5 per spayed or neutered pet or $20 per unaltered pet to Carrollton Animal Shelter, 2727 Nimitz Road, Carrollton, TX, 75007.

KCB hosts rain barrel class
Keep Carrollton Beautiful will host a “Make and Take Rain Barrel Class” at 11 a.m. May 10 at Town Center.

Volunteers needed for weekday trail guide program
Elm Fork Nature Preserve is searching for volunteers to help at itsr Outdoor Discovery Program.
Volunteers will be hosts of a weekday trail walk at the preserve. Volunteers for the program are needed to lead groups of elementary school children.
While the program will focus on two main themes of adaptations and habitats for the children, volunteers will be asked to direct activities, discussions and lead trail hikes up to two times each month.

Chamber hosts golf tournament
The Metrocrest Chamber of Commerce will have its Masters Golf Tournament on May 12 at the Riverchase Golf Club in Coppell.
Lunch will begin at noon, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and awards at 6:30 p.m.

Wheelchair tennis comes to Carrollton
The Dallas Wheelchair Tennis Club and Carrollton Parks and Recreation have formed a new partnership to promote wheelchair tennis in the city.
The 27th annual Texas Open Wheelchair Championships, part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour and sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association, will take place May 29 to June 1 at Oak Creek Tennis Center.
Programming includes up/down tennis leagues and drills for beginner and advanced players.
