Former C-FB grad welcomed into academic fraternity
Michelle Falconer, former graduate of Creekview High School, was invited to join Phi Beta Kappa, an academic fraternity that specializes in liberal arts and science. Falconer, 20, is a psychology and Spanish double major at Texas Tech University. She is currently studying abroad in Spain. Membership into Phi Beta Kappa is offered only to the top 10 percent of students on a select number of college campuses, according to their Web site.
The University of Nebraska in Lincoln recently announced that Lindsey Faires and Christopher Pelky, of Carrollton, have been named to the dean’s list for the 2007 fall semester.
State CPA organization honors Carrollton student
The Texas Society of CPAs (TSCPA) announced that Taylor Leigh Gilbert, of Carrollton, was awarded a TSCPA Accounting Education Foundation scholarship. Gilbert is a student at Texas A&M University. Each year, TSCPA’s Accounting Education Foundation honors Texas accounting students with scholarships for their academic achievements. TSCPA is a non-profit, voluntary, professional organization representing Texas CPAs. The society has 20 local chapters statewide and has 27,000 members.
Troyanns win at ‘Big D’
The Newman Smith Troyann Drill Team won several awards at the Big “D” Dance Extravaganza contest at South Garland High School on Feb. 23. The Troyann officers received two 4-star trophies for their jazz/lyrical routine, one 5-star trophy for their pom routine and received first place (gold) for their pom routine. The Troyanns earned a perfect sweepstakes award, which indicates 90 or above from all judges on each dance. The team also earned second place (silver) for their pom, jazz and open categories. In addition, the team earned an Excellence in Precision and Excellence in Entertainment awards. Debra Roth directs the team.
The Troyanns will continue their performances this spring when they travel to Orlando, Fla., on April 3-6 to participate in the Disney World Magic Music Days Program, where they will perform several routines on a Disney stage.

Turner scholarship dinner raises funds
The R. L. Turner band scholarship dinner will be 5-9 p.m. Friday in the R. L. Turner High School cafeteria, 1600 Josey Lane. Tickets are $8 for a spaghetti dinner and $4 for a hot dog. All money will fund scholarships. The evening will include a silent auction with more than 100 items, a drawing for two round-trip tickets for Southwest Airlines and a used instrument drive. Students problem solve this weekend
Destination ImagiNation (DI) will be holding it's regional tournament from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday. As the world's largest problem solving program, DI requires students to think outside the box and use their creative imagination to solve several set challenges. The events are at R. L. Turner High School, 1600 Josey Lane.
Cornerstone set for intermediate school
At 10 a.m. Saturday, the cornerstone ceremony for the future Nancy Strickland Intermediate School will take place. The event is planned to be hosted by James A. Smith Lodge of Farmers Branch. The school is planned to open for the 2008-09 school year, becoming C-FB ISD's newest addition. The event is at 3030 Fyke Road in Farmers Branch.
Turner welcomes young college-bound
R. L. Turner High School will host Elementary College Night for fifth grade students on March 12. Participating schools are: Blair, Carrollton, Central, Farmers Branch, Good, McLaughlin, and Janie Stark. The guest speakers of the evening will be Macarena Hernandez of the Dallas Morning News and Gloria Campos of WFAA Channel 8. Elementary students see it all
On March 12, Carrollton Elementary's third grade students will be traveling to the Agriculture Science Project Center, 1600 Sandy Lake Road, for the Carrollton Elementary AgVenture.
Students will learn a hands-on version of the history and importance of the agricultural industry. The excursion will take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
School board meeting next week
The next school board meeting is at 7 p.m. March 13 at the Administration Building, 1445 N. Perry Road.
HOSA: Donate time, save a life
Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) will join with Carter Blood Care in the small gym of R. L. Turner High School for a community blood drive. The drive will be open to the public from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on March 14. Appointments are not required, but bring a photo ID. The blood donation will take up to 35 minutes.
Nasher petitions teachers to nominate students for art institute
Dallas, Texas n The Nasher Sculpture Center announces the launch of the “Nasher Summer Institute for Teens,” a five-day art curriculum for teacher-nominated high school students in grades 10-12. The institute, which is funded by a grant from the O’Donnell Foundation, will take place June 16-20. It is designed exclusively for Dallas/Fort Worth area students interested in pursuing art-related fields in college. Teacher recommendations will be accepted by the Nasher’s Education Department beginning March 15.
Focused sessions will include special issues in sculpture, studio art, close study of works in the Nasher Collection and behind-the-scenes interaction with Nasher staff and visiting artists. Tuition for participating students is free and includes class materials, art supplies, transportation stipends and lunches. Enrollment is limited to 30 students and participants will be selected based on teacher recommendations. Contact the Education Department at 214-242-5170 for information and applications.
Special Ed PTSA changes meeting time
The Lewisville ISD Special Ed PTSA has moved their meeting from March 13 to March 26. The event will be from 7-9 p.m. March 26 at the Student Services Building, located at 400 W. Main Street. The program will discuss the Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) and Medicare Waiver Programs with Leslie Canales, Denton County MHMR.
Community Based Alternatives (CBA), Community Living Assistance and Support Services (CLASS), Deaf/Blind with Multiple Disabilities (DBMD), Home and Community Service (HCS), and Medically Dependent Children’s Program (MDCP) will also be covered.

C-FB offers $10 tickets to Dallas Stars games
Tickets are $10 for any upper level seats. The next family night is March 19, when the Stars play Anaheim.

SEPTSA selling annual plants
The Lewisville ISD Special Ed PTSA is selling begonias, petunias, impatiens, coleus and herbs. Each flat is $20, and the SEPTSA earns $5 for each flat sold. The order deadline is March 14.

Smith sells engraved bricks for new walkway
Newman Smith High School PTSA is selling engraved bricks for the “new traditions” walkway. The bricks are 4 inches by 8 inches and can be customized with three lines of text and a logo for $35. A larger brick, 8 inches by 8 inches, can be customized with up to six lines of text and two logos. The money supports the scholarship fund of the Newman Smith High School PTA. Scholarship deadline approaching
The deadline for the Tom Harpool Horticultural Scholarship, which is being offered by the Denton County Master Gardener Association, is March 31. The Tom Harpool Horticultural Scholarship was created to assist and encourage students enrolled in the study of horticulture or other gardening-related subjects. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to any Denton County resident who is currently enrolled in a horticulture or related major at any college or university.
To apply for the scholarship, go to www.dcmga.com and click on “Scholarship.” Print the application, complete it and mail with proof of enrollment and two letters of recommendation to DCMGA Scholarship Committee, c/o M. Scholarship available for students in health professions
Trinity Medical Center Volunteer's Auxiliary has a scholarship open to all high school students attending any public or private high school within the city limits of Carrollton, as well as The Colony High School.
Those eligible to apply must:
•Plan to attend a Texas university or college;
•Major in a health-related field;
•Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale;
•Have a minimum score of 1000 on the SAT and 22 on the ACT ; and
•Volunteer a minimum of 60 hours, cumulative, during their high school career.
Applications may be picked up in the high schools' counseling offices or from the Trinity Medical Center information desk.

Furneaux offers scholarship to an alumnus
The Michael Ebanks Alumni Scholarship is a $550 award given yearly to one student who attended Furneaux Elementary. Michael Ebanks was a former Furneaux Elementary student who died in the collapse of the Texas A&M bonfire on Nov. 18, 1999. In honor of him, the Furneaux PTA has established the Michael Ebanks Alumni Scholarship. Students can pick up an application at the high school counselor's office. Chick-fil-A, Lenny’s Subshop host band fundraisers
Every Thursday from 2:30-9 p.m., Lenny’s Subshop in Carrollton will donate 15 percent of purchases to the Hebron marching band. Lenny’s Subshop is located at 3220 E Hebron Parkway. The Hebron color guard is also hosting a fundraiser the first Tuesday of each month at Chick-Fil-A, located at Plano Parkway and Park Boulevard in Plano. Mention Hebron when you place your order, and a portion of your purchase will support the guard.
Newman Smith drill team hosts tryouts
The Troyann Drill Team will hold line tryouts for the 2008-09 school year at 4:30 p.m. May 22 at the freshman gym at Newman Smith High School. Tryout workshops to prepare for the actual tryout are also required, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. May 19-21. In addition, an informational meeting will be held for parents and prospective drill team members at 7-8 p.m. April 21 in room Community Room SE 151 at the high school. Prior dance experience is not required to participate.
