Book sale seeks volunteers, donations

The seventh annual Gently Used Book Sale, sponsored by the C-FB ISD Council of PTAs and the Educational Foundation, is now through March 2 at the Trinity Valley Shopping Center on Josey Lane. Today and Thursday, paperbacks are $1 and hardbacks are $2. On Friday and Saturday, paperbacks are 50 cents and hardbacks are $1. And on Sunday, boxes of books are $15 each.

The book sale is open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. today, Thursday and Friday. Hours on Saturday are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Hours on Sunday are 1-6 p.m.

Each school and the administration buildings are drop-off points for donations. Collection boxes are usually located near the school’s main office. Interested people can also drop off books at the book sale location, 2610 Josey Lane, on the following dates and times:

•Tuesdays and Thursdays:

9 a.m.-1 p.m.; 7-9 p.m.

•Saturdays: 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

•Sundays: 1-5 p.m.

The event also needs volunteers to sort and organize on the days listed above.

School board meeting Feb. 28

The next school board meeting is at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Administration Building, 1445 N. Perry Road.

Chick-fil-A, Lenny’s Subshop host band fundraisers

Every Thursday from 2:30-9 p.m., Lenny’s Subshop in Carrollton will donate 15 percent of purchases to the Hebron marching band. Lenny’s Subshop is located at 3220 E Hebron Parkway. The Hebron color guard is also hosting a fundraiser the first Tuesday of each month at Chick-Fil-A, located at Plano Parkway and Park Boulevard in Plano. Mention Hebron when you place your order, and a portion of your purchase will support the guard.

Turner scholarship dinner raises funds

The R. L. Turner band scholarship dinner will be 5-9 p.m. March 7 in the R. L. Turner High School cafeteria, 1600 Josey Lane. Tickets are $8 for a spaghetti dinner and $4 for a hot dog. All money will fund scholarships. The evening will include a silent auction with over 100 items, a drawing for two round-trip tickets for Southwest Airlines and a used instrument drive. 27 Hebron band students receive ‘superior’ ratings

Ten Hebron band students were selected to advance to the UIL state solo contest in May. Yukie Fujii (12th) and Stefan Lim (9th) performed flute solos. Osar Aimuyo (11th), Roxanne Lee (10th) and Jill Starks (10th) performed on the clarinet. Noel Behailu (12th) played soprano saxophone and Chris Rzeznik (11th) played alto saxophone. Also, Josh Fetter-Salmon (11th) on oboe, Sarah Cooper (12th) on horn and Trent Commons (10th) on trumpet advanced to the state contest.

In addition 27 students from the Hebron band earned a first division "superior" rating at the UIL regional solo contest.

On flute: Heather Belle (9th), Kristen Burges (10th), Yukie Fujii (12th), Stefan Lim (9th), Shulin Ye (9th), Kayla Ross (10th) and Hannah Wharton.

On oboe: Stephanie Belt (11th) and Josh Fetter-Salmon (11th).

On bassoon: Emily Kong (11th) earned a First Division rating.

On clarinet: Osar Aimuyo (11th), Robert Aaron (9th), Trey Chadwell (11th), Melissa Goolsbee (9th), Roxanne Lee (10th) and Jill Starks (10th).

On bass clarinet: Emily Roman (12th).

On soprano saxophone: Noel Behailu (12th).

On alto saxophone: Chris Rzeznik (11th).

On trumpet: Trent Commons (10th), Joel Huyhn-(10th), Kelsie Dunham (9th) and Ryan King (11th).

On French horn: Sarah Cooper (12th).

On trombone: Jay Cawyer (10th), D.A. Simpson (9th) and Sigrid Schneider (9th).

Special Ed PTSA to host meeting

The Lewisville ISD Special Ed PTSA will host a meeting from 7-9 p.m. March 13 at the Student Services Building, located at 400 W. Main Street. The program will discuss the Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) and Medicare Waiver Programs with Leslie Canales, Denton County MHMR.

Community Based Alternatives (CBA), Community Living Assistance and Support Services (CLASS), Deaf/Blind with Multiple Disabilities (DBMD), Home and Community Service (HCS), and Medically Dependent Children’s Program (MDCP) will also be covered.

C-FB offers $10 tickets to Dallas Stars games

Tickets are $10 for any upper level seats. The next family night is March 19, when the Stars play Anaheim.

SEPTSA selling annual plants

The Lewisville ISD Special Ed PTSA is selling begonias, petunias, impatiens, coleus and herbs. Each flat is $20, and the SEPTSA earns $5 for each flat sold. The order deadline is March 14.

Smith sells engraved bricks for new walkway

Newman Smith High School PTSA is selling engraved bricks for the “new traditions” walkway. The bricks are 4 inches by 8 inches and can be customized with three lines of text and a logo for $35. A larger brick, 8 inches by 8 inches, can be customized with up to six lines of text and two logos. The money supports the scholarship fund of the Newman Smith High School PTA. Scholarship deadline approaching

The deadline for the Tom Harpool Horticultural Scholarship, which is being offered by the Denton County Master Gardener Association, is March 31. The Tom Harpool Horticultural Scholarship was created to assist and encourage students enrolled in the study of horticulture or other gardening-related subjects. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to any Denton County resident who is currently enrolled in a horticulture or related major at any college or university.

To apply for the scholarship, go to www.dcmga.com and click on “Scholarship.” Print the application, complete it and mail with proof of enrollment and two letters of recommendation to DCMGA Scholarship Committee, c/o M. Scholarship available for students in health professions

Trinity Medical Center Volunteer's Auxiliary has a scholarship open to all high school students attending any public or private high school within the city limits of Carrollton, as well as The Colony High School. 

Those eligible to apply must:

•Plan to attend a Texas university or college;

•Major in a health-related field;

•Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale;

•Have a minimum score of 1000 on the SAT and 22 on the ACT ; and

•Volunteer a minimum of 60 hours, cumulative, during their high school career. 

Applications may be picked up in the high schools' counseling offices or from the Trinity Medical Center information desk.

Furneaux offers scholarship to an alumnus

The Michael Ebanks Alumni Scholarship is a $550 award given yearly to one student who attended Furneaux Elementary. Michael Ebanks was a former Furneaux Elementary student who died in the collapse of the Texas A&M bonfire on Nov. 18, 1999. In honor of him, the Furneaux PTA has established the Michael Ebanks Alumni Scholarship. Students can pick up an application at the high school counselor's office.
