Hispanic students recognized for high PSAT scores
Seven Carrollton-Farmers Branch students were given awards through the National Hispanic Recognition program for their high scores on the PSAT test. They are: Alyssa M. Aguilera from Creekview High School; Jonathon Garrett and Bethany Lorentzen from R.L. Turner High School; and Emmanuel A. Ayala, Lily De La Fuente, Eric Garlock and Alexander E. Gonzales from Newman Smith High School. This award is presented by the National Merit Scholarship Program. The 3,300 Hispanic students around the country who received the highest scores on the PSAT received this award.
C-FB school district hosts book drive
Carrollton-Farmers Branch high schools are having a competition to see which school can donate the most books to the PTA and Educational Foundation’s 2008 Gently Used Book Sale. Van Chevrolet is providing trucks at the entrances to Standridge Stadium to collect donations between 6:30 and 8 p.m. on the home and visitor side during football games. Donations will be collected at the following football games: Nov. 2, R.L. Turner vs. Newman Smith and Nov. 9, Newman Smith vs. Creekview.
The Gently Used Book Sale raises funds for scholarships and grants from the C-FB ISD Educational Foundation. IT also raises money for C-FB ISD Council of PTAs projects, including grants to the High School Post Proms and Clothes Closet.
The group will resell the books Feb. 27-29 and March 1-2.
Become an empowered parent: Attend ‘Parent University’
The Carrollton-Farmers Branch school district is offering weekly lunch ‘n learn classes for parents from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays. The title for the Oct. 18 class is “The bully, the victim and the bystander.” The title for the Oct. 25 class is “Emotion coaching: parenting styles and five steps of emotion coaching.”
All classes will be in the Community Learning Complex (CLC), building B, 1820 Pearl St. in Carrollton. For information, English speakers should call 972-968-6509 and Spanish speakers should call 972-968-6508.
Juniors take PSAT test
Oct. 17 is the date for all high school juniors to take the PSAT. Home-school students can contact Gerry Charlebois to register at 972-968-4368.
Blalack hosts orchestra concert
The fall orchestra concert for Blalack Middle School will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Blalack cafeteria, 1706 Peters Colony in Carrollton. The public is invited to attend.
Newman Smith students sell their stuff
The orchestra students at Newman Smith High School will host a garage sale in front of Newman Smith High School from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 20. Newman Smith is located at 2335 N. Josey Lane in Carrollton. For information or to arrange for pick-up of large items, contact Merriel Smith at 972-307-2256 or merriel_mcneilsmith@hotmail.com. Proceeds from the garage sale will be used for music scholarships and competition expenses.
Lionettes host garage sale
The R.L. Turner Lionettes will host a garage sale in the R.L. Turner student parking lot, 1600 Josey Lane, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 20.
School board meeting Oct. 25
Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD will have its twice monthly meeting for the Board of Trustees at 7 p.m. Oct. 25. The meeting will be in the Administration Building, 1445 N. Perry Road in Carrollton.
PTA plans early childhood fall party
The Carrollton Early Childhood PTA Fall Party will include hayrides, picking pumpkins, bounce houses, great photo opportunities and other fun activities. The party begins 9:30 a.m. Oct. 27 at Flower Mound Pumpkin Patch, 5100 Cross Timbers Road in Flower Mound. The hayride will start promptly at 10 a.m. Bring a lunch for you and your child. Club organizes vision clinic at Perry
The Lion’s Club will host a vision clinic from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 17 in the Perry Middle School Cafeteria, 1709 Beltline Road in Carrollton. This clinic is free to those that qualify. For information, contact Terri Lyons at 972-968-6500.
Smith orchestras present concert
The Newman Smith High School Symphonic, Philharmonic, Camerata and Concert orchestras will open their 29th concert season at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Pauline Keeton Smith Performing Arts Center at Newman Smith High School. The concert is free. For information, call the orchestra office at 972-968-5323.
C-FB orchestra students attend university workshop
Orchestra students from two Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD high schools participated in the annual String Invitational held recently at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. The university-sponsored event is a workshop for students who plan to audition for the Texas Music Educators Association All-Region Orchestra and/or All-State Orchestra in the fall. Classes are given for each instrument at various skill levels. Students from Newman Smith High School attending were Dave Bryant, Sofia Herran, Jessica Hong, Thao Huynh, Mubeen Mandani, Kelsey Maxwell, Jordan Rhyne, Steven Schott, Kevin Smith, Allison Snyder, Dennis Takeda, Sarah Ting, Patrick Vuong, Tina Vuong and Amber Wiseman. The students from R. L. Turner High School were Carrie Pope, Christopher Tensmeyer and Joe Garcia.
